Flatulence occurs when gas passes through your digestive system. It is caused by the minute amounts of air that are swallowed when you eat or drink, along with the air that enters the throat when you simply swallow your saliva.

The condition is a normal bodily function, but in excess it may be embarrassing and even painful. Here are a few signs that you may need to see a doctor about your flatulence and some of the measures that you can take to treat the condition.

Signs That You Need to See a Doctor About Your Flatulence

Flatulence that is not smelly, frequent, or uncomfortable may not be particularly troublesome. However, if you consider your flatulence painful or excessive, you may want to schedule an appointment with your medical provider.

Here are a few indications that a visit with your doctor may be warranted:

  • Painful bloating. When the frequent passing of wind is accompanied by chronic abdominal swelling and discomfort, you may want to investigate the underlying cause of the symptoms as the bloating and pain may not be normal digestive occurrences.
  • Diarrhea. Frequent loose stools along with flatulence may require treatment.
  • Constipation. Constipation, like diarrhea, may indicate a digestive problem when accompanied by flatulence.
  • Weight gain or loss. If fluctuations in weight are occurring along with an increase in flatulence, there may be a health issue that needs to be addressed.
  • Bloody stools. Flatulence with blood in the stools should be investigated by a medical professional.

Treating Flaluence

To control flatulence and alleviate discomfort, your physician may ask you to make lifestyle and dietary changes. Here are a few things that you can do to lessen excessive flatulence:

  • Avoid gassy foods, such as broccoli.
  • Don't consume milk or other dairy products if you are lactose intolerant.
  • Chew your food slowly as you eat.
  • Exercise daily.

If you don't find relief from behavioral changes, your doctor may suggest a flatulence medication. Over-the-counter medicines are sometimes sufficient, but in severe cases, a prescription medication may be needed.

The medications typically contain simethicone or charcoal. Simethicone is a special foaming product that connects to the gas in the stomach so that the gas can easily escape when you burp. Activated charcoal can be used to trap or absorb intestinal toxins and gases.

For more information about treatments to help relieve your flatulence, schedule a consultation with a physician in your local area.

About Me
Creating A Healthier Life

After struggling with my health for years and years, I realized that something had to change. I stopped relying so much on my multi-vitamin, and started spending a lot of time eating right and exercising. It was really strange to see how much those simple things affected my body, and before I knew it, I was feeling so much better. I also worked with my health provider to choose a plan that worked for me. He also uncovered a few medical issues I didn't realize I was suffering with, and it was great to start things off on the right foot.
