There is a big difference between a cold and the flu, although most people don't know the difference between the two. A cold can feel severe, but it will go away with time. The flu can take longer to go away and could possibly be deadly if you aren't careful and don't take care of yourself. Read on for the difference between a cold and the flu and ways to prevent getting sick in the first place.

Cold Symptoms

Colds symptoms occur gradually. You may begin to notice a sore throat or have a cough that contains mucous. You may also have a slight fever, or even have body aches and pains as well as some discomfort in your chest. Sneezing is also common with colds. This is a virus that will clear up in just a few days.

Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever will help ease any discomfort until the cold passes. Antibiotics will not help clear up a cold and should not be used. Be sure to drink plenty of water to help thin out the mucous and skip drinking milk which may thicken the mucous. Use a humidifier in winter months to help break up the mucous. Sleeping propped up at night can help with mucous drainage as well.

Flu Symptoms

The flu will usually hit you quickly. You may have a fever, chills, body aches, headaches, sore throat, and a dry cough. You may have chest pain or discomfort as well, and feel lethargic. Vomiting and/or diarrhea may also be present.

The flu is sometimes treated with over-the-counter pain relievers and antibiotics. Some strains of the flu can be deadly, especially for the really young or old. Be sure to drink plenty of water if you have the flu, and drink broth if you're having problems keeping food down or eating solid foods.

Preventing The Cold And Flu

To help prevent getting sick in the first place is ideal, although sometimes it hits you even if you take good care of yourself. Wash your hands throughout the day often using warm water and soap. Don't share drinks with others, as you're just passing germs around. You should also be sure to eat and drink healthy. Taking vitamins will also help give you the necessary vitamins and minerals that you may not be getting with your diet. Getting the flu shot before the flu season begins will help to ease flu symptoms if you happen to get the flu.

If you have a severe cold or flu and are in need of medical attention, go to urgent care for a checkup and exam. Companies like Meadowbrook Urgent Care can offer more information.

About Me
Creating A Healthier Life

After struggling with my health for years and years, I realized that something had to change. I stopped relying so much on my multi-vitamin, and started spending a lot of time eating right and exercising. It was really strange to see how much those simple things affected my body, and before I knew it, I was feeling so much better. I also worked with my health provider to choose a plan that worked for me. He also uncovered a few medical issues I didn't realize I was suffering with, and it was great to start things off on the right foot.
